The Ackman site is an integral part of the history and evolution of Smith Street. We are reinstating a landmark for the future of Fitzroy and Collingwood. Currently occupied by the Woolworths supermarket and car park, the site remains an important local meeting place that supports a thriving collection of local shops and ancillary retail along Smith Street.
Our vision is to create an integrated series of buildings between Hodgson, St David, Smith and Gore Streets that reinstates a landmark address and restiches the neihghbourhood fabric.
Today – an empty facade stands as a relic of the street’s important social and economic history. In the future – The Ackman Buildings will reinstate the heritage proportions and rejuvenate the heart of Smith Street for a resilient local economy and long term.
This placemaking report draws from the site’s historic, social, and economic context in order to present a modern narrative for the future of 243 Smith Street.
